  1. FIRE SAFETY Part 1 – Fire Hazards and Controls

  2. Elements of a Fire • Fuel • Oxygen • Heat or Ignition Source Remove any ONE of the elements to extinguish or prevent a fire.

  3. Fuel • Combustible materials: • Trash • Cardboard and Paper • Solvent-containing products: • Paints and Thinners • Degreasers • Gasoline • Oil- and solvent-soaked rags • Magnesium shavings

  4. Oxygen • The air around us • Leaking oxygen cylinders

  5. Heat or Ignition Source • Sparks from welding or grinding • Damaged electrical wires or cords • Lit cigarettes • Sparks from blow torches • Sparks from pouring or pumping flammable chemicals

  6. Precautions - Chemicals • Keep containers closed when not in use • Keep the mixing room door closed • Clean up small spills promptly • Limit the amount of flammable products stored outside the mixing room or flammable cabinets

  7. Precautions – Used Shop Rags • Metal containers with self-closing lids • Do not overload containers • Empty containers every night

  8. Precautions – Oxygen Cylinders • Never use oil or grease on the fittings • Remove leaky cylinders immediately • Store: • with cap on when regulator not attached • away from combustible materials • away from flammable gases • secured to a wall or cart

  9. Is this a problem? What would YOU do?

  10. Precautions - Welding • Do not weld where flammable chemicals are in use or being stored • Do not weld near the mixing room or paint booth • Remove/Cover combustible materials • Have a fire extinguisher on hand • When finished, inspect the area for smoldering embers

  11. Precautions -Paint Booth and Mixing Room • Explosion-proof light fixtures in good condition • Explosion-proof electrical conduits and switches

  12. Precautions - Electrical Panels • No unguarded openings • Door closed at all times • Clear access

  13. Precautions – Electrical Cords • Do not overload extension cords • Do not use cords with damaged insulation • Replace cords that get hot during normal equipment use • Extension cords are NOT permanent wiring

  14. Precautions – Grounding and Bonding • Ground containers larger than 5 gallons before pouring thinner • Grounding clamps must be attached to a bare metal surface - not over paint • Bond containers before transfer

  15. Precautions - Magnesium • Fire hazard • No smoking • No open flames • Class D extinguisher

  16. Summary Fires are prevented when: • Flammable materials are stored and used safely • The paint booth and mixing room are free of electrical hazards • Sources of sparks are eliminated
