Evaluating Statements About Probability Projector Resources
What does the probability 0.5 mean? • What do we mean when we say a fair coin? • What do we mean when we say a standard 6 sided cube.
Your Task • Based on the given scenario, your task will be to decide is the statement given is true or false. • Once you have made a decision, you will need to convince me.
Two bags of jellybeans I have two bags. Both contain red and yellow jellybeans. There are more red jellybeans in bag A than in bag B. If I choose one jellybean from each bag I am more likely to choose a red one from bag A than from bag B.
Things to Consider • What information do you know? DO you know how many red and yellow jelly beans are in each bag? • Can you describe a situation when the statement would be true? • Can you describe a situation when the statement would be false?
Divide your posters into two columns. One for true statements and one for false statements.
True, False or Unsure? • Take turns to select a card and decide whether it is a true or false statement. • Convince your partner of your decision. • It is important that you both understand the reasons for the decision. If you don’t agree with your partner, explain why. You are both responsible for each other’s learning. • If you are both happy with the decision, glue the card onto the paper. Next to the card, write reasons to support your decision. • Put to one side any cards you are unsure about and you can return to them later.
Things to Consider • Try listing all possible outcomes for an event. • Could you design an experiment to check your answer? • What other factors could possibly affect the outcome for certain events? • Are all outcomes equally likely? • When something is certain, what is its probability?
