Objective: ICT for Rapid Adoption of Samoa Pathway & SDGs • Samoa Pathway, Section 109 (Capacity Building -- Human & Technology) - • (Para h) To establish national and regional information and communications technology platforms and information dissemination hubs in small island developing States to facilitate information exchange and cooperation, building on existing information and communication platforms, as appropriate; • SDGs: Support the 17 Pillars through ICT • Most National Visions (e.g., Jamaica Vision 2030) Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) (Web Technologies, Mobile Technologies, Sensors, AI Techniques, Analytics, Big Data, Wireless Technologies, Integration Technologies, IOTs, WOTs, Computer Aided Planning, etc.)

Focus: ICT Hubs as Centers of Activity (Virtual, Physical, Mixture) Disaster Agriculture Health Rural & Regional Hubs Communications National Hub Many Hubs needed (eSeva, Tech Hubs, 1 for population of 5000 ) • High failure rates (50% to 80%) due to following challenges • Where to locate a Hub • What type of service to provide for the area • What type of ICT infrastructure would be needed • Security, privacy, policy issues • Funding, partnerships and Capacity building • Project management, IT management

Methodology for Rapid Adoption of ICT: Analyze the Jamaica Vision 2030 document and the mid-term reports Pinpoint the National Priority Outcomes in order Identify the National Priority Areas Propose ICT Hubs to support the National Priority Areas and to bridge any gap(s) in the existing ICT framework Inform the Govt. about UN ICT4SID Partnership – Invite the Govt. to Run/Join Pilot Project.

Results Continue • Informed Government Agents about ICT4SID • The Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ) • Jamaica’s Ambassador to the United Nations • Had Dr Amjad Umar presented UN ICT4SID to PIOJ’s Technical team – via Skype • Had the Deputy Director General of PIOJ communicated the potential benefits of the ICT4SID Pilot Project (to Jamaica) to Chief Technical Director - Information Communication Technology, Ministry of Science, Energy and Technology

Going Forward • Work with the Minister of Science, Energy and Technologyon the UN ICT4SIDS Pilot Project Partnership (via his Permanent Secretary) • Plan a visit to Jamaica for a Capacity Building Workshop • Deploy and Support Requisite Hubs • Write a white paper on the results of the Pilot Projects (A Road Map For UN ICT4SID Adoption in Jamaican) • Present Paper at International Conference

  17. Tanzania: Educating School Teachers in ICT Project Vision Educating school teachers in ICT program to open life-changing opportunities for teachers and students through quality education. The purposes of the project are: Using Computers in Classrooms: Teaching science subjects (Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Information Systems and Computer Applications). This will equip teachers with the knowledge of how to use computers to research and to teach their respective courses. Using Computers in Office Environment: Training scholars to use computers in their offices to do different activities. Computers have become a way of life. Most people don't have the basic understanding and knowledge of computers, making computer training in demand. Facility: The project is being done at TUMAINI UNIVERSITY MAKUMIRA MBEYA CENTRE – (TUMA-MC).

Methodology Used : Analyzed the gaps in Tanzanian ICT education Focused on educating school teachers as a Priority Area Proposed an ICT Hub for educating High School Teachers in ICT Needed ICT Hub generated by using Computer Aided Planning Course content with Mobile apps generated POC has gone through the Training University facilities selected for deployment Starting work with Educating Nurses also

  19. ICT FACILITIES Laboratories, Library The University has computer laboratory, language laboratory, nursing laboratory and a library. Computer Laboratory Computer laboratory has about 90 computers which are working, but the room can accommodate about 100 computers.
