Background • Birds are sold for hunting dog field trials, dog training, or to hunting preserves • Birds at dog trials are dead by end of event. • NPIP participant • July 19-2008: • Last tested negative for AI by PCR • 10 Mallards • 10 Pheasants • 10 Chukar
Background:History of Current Outbreak • Reoccurring problems with MG and pasturellosis in his flock • August 2008: pheasants with low grade respiratory illness • not associated with major mortality • Submitted 3 birds to Penn State University Animal Diagnostic Laboratory
Background:History of Current Outbreak • Cultured Pasturella and Mycoplasma • Routine AI test positive by PCR • August 29, 2008: • NVSL confirmed H5 positive and N1 negative • Premises quarantined by ISDA • Enhanced flock testing • 20 groups of birds • 14 groups of ducks or pheasants showed evidence of H5N8 and other types of AI infection.
Background:History of Current Outbreak • September 2, 2008: • NVSL confirmed Low Path H5N8 • Sequencing results showed similarities with: • 98.5% A/mallard/BC/373/2005 H5N2 • 98.3% A/tundra swan/AK/44049-168/2006 H5N2 • September 3, 2008: officially reported • September 4, 2008: reported to OIE
