History of the Nintendo Wii By Charlotte Marriner
About the Wii • The Wii is a home video game console • It was release by Nintendo on November 19, 2006 • It was a seventh generation console • The Wii competed with the Xbox 360 and the PS3
Unique Features of the Wii • Motion Controls – through the use of the Wii controller • Detects movement in 3 dimensions • The main menu screen is set out like a TV, replicating changing channels with the controller (remote)
Strengths • Unique concept, no similar products on its release • Most interactive console • Appealed to all ages • Lowest priced on release compared to competitors (PS3 and Xbox 360) • Had a high demand • Was available worldwide • Multiple people can play at once – a party console • Ease of use – Menu like point to a TV channel
Weaknesses • Weakest graphics compared to competitors • Limited selection of software compared to other competitors • No HD (unlike PS3 and Xbox 360) • Do not own motion sensing software, so other companies were able to compete (potential threat) • Lack of third party presence
Were the key features used in later consoles? • Wii U was the successor of the Wii – only similar to the Wii in terms of having backwards compatibility and online support • The Nintendo Switch was the second successor, succeeding the Wii U – this was similar to the Wii in the way that it included motion detecting controllers
Who was the target demographic? • Target Demographic for the Wii was all age groups • After its release, it became the norm to own one of these consoles as it had become a family console • It made those who initially were not interested in games, interested • It was aimed at more than just younger males like most games were, opening the market to many • It became the family console/party console featuring games such as Mario Kart and Mario Party
Did the console change the way games were made? • Yes, the controller had to be modified to detect shaking, balance, location etc. • Because of these new, innovative features, new games were produced such as the Mario Party games, Mario Kart, Wii Fit, Warioware – Games that could not be played on systems such as the Xbox 360 or PS3
Did it succeed? • As presented below, it sold almost 20 million more units than the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 • This is because it introduced a brand new playstyle that had not been made before using motion sensors on the new controllers • This idea was so brilliant that Microsoft and Sony introduced the Kinect and PlayStation Move
Did it fail? • Not at all • However, to hardcore gamers, this could have been perceived as a fail as the game released more casual family games or games for younger children to play and did not cater as much to hardcore gamers • The system itself was also not as strong as its competitors, however its new features made up for this
Why was this? • Wii had the weakest CPU (729 MHz compared to 3.2 GHz for competitors) • Had the smallest memory (88MB compared to 256MB and 512MB for PS3 and Xbox 360, respectively) • Had the weakest Graphics (243 MHz compared to 550 MHz and 500 MHz for PS3 and Xbox 360 respectively)
What were the systems best games? • Wario Ware: Smooth Moves • Super Smash Bros. Brawl • Super Mario Galaxy • Wii Sports • Wii Fit • Mario Kart Wii • Wii Sports Resort • New Super Mario Bros Wii • Mario Party 8
How did consumers buy games for the system? • Consumers could either buy games on the Wii Store as well as download Wii Channels, WiiWare titles and Redeem Nintendo points • Consumers could also buy Wii games from local game stores or supermarkets that sell games
Was indie development available on the system? • Yes, Indie games were available on the Wii • They could be found on the Nintendo Shop Channel • Some Examples: • Bit trip runner • The Oceanic Six • TV Show King • V.I.P. Casino: Blackjack
Who were the major publishers of games on the system? The major publishers of games on the system were Nintendo and Ubisoft
