Building Volunteer Leaders:Sharing Experiences of Seasoned ASSE Volunteers Jeffery C. Camplin, MS, CSP, CPEA Ashok Garlapati, CSP,QEP,CMIOSH Global Leadership Session #2
The Importance of Volunteer Leaders • Imagine a world without volunteers? • Volunteering helps others while helping yourself
What is Leadership? “The art of getting someone else to do something you want done because they want to do it.” President Dwight Eisenhower
Leadership Theories • Great Man – “born leaders” • Trait – “behaviors or personality traits” • Contingency – “style suits the situation” • Behavioral – “leaders are made not born” • Participative – “lead with input from the group” • Management – “reward and punishment” • Relationship – “ connections between leader & follower • Refer to the article “Volunteers leading Volunteers”
Phases in Leadership Making Note. Adapted from Leadership: Theory and Practice, 4th ed. (p. 138), by P. Northouse, 2007, Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson.
Leadership Requires Followers • The very essence of all power to influence lies in getting the other person to participate. • “He who thinks he leads , but has no followers, is only taking a walk.” – John C. Maxwell • Followers require a vision
“Drive- The surprising truth about what motivates us”by Daniel Pink • Carrot and Stick motivation is “old school” • External rewards vs. inherent satisfaction • Science supports a new motivational theory: • Autonomy – what you do, when you do it, who you do it with, and how it gets done • Mastery – “flow” of optimal experiences where challenges meet our abilities (Goldilocks tasks) • Purpose – Beyond the individual: social responsibility
Examples of the Vision • ASSE’s Body of Knowledge • Participating at Professional Development Events • Writing articles for Professional Safety Journal or Technical Publications • Mentoring Students and Young Professionals • Linking Safety with Other Causes
#1 TIP for Gaining Volunteers ASK* * Using some salesmanship
Leadership Tips • Volunteers choose to be led—they cannot be forced to follow you. • Influence is the strongest trait of a leader of volunteers. • He who thinks he leads but has no followers is just taking a walk. • Develop respect from volunteers and give respect back. • Be trustworthy—have both character and competency. • Develop a sense of obligation for volunteers— get buy-in.
Leadership Tips • Acknowledge appreciation for a volunteer’s efforts - people want recognition. • Provide opportunities for volunteers to grow - then ask them to participate. • Keep your eye out for emerging leaders - give them opportunities to advance. • Mentor or provide mentors for up-and coming leaders -show them the way. • Lead by example - present an image of what a good leader looks like. • Leave a legacy by filling your shoes with an emerging leader - always have a succession plan.
Building a Legacy • Be an active ASSE volunteer • Move into leadership roles • Contribute your knowledge and experience • Engage others to participate • Make a difference in the profession
