Sitting Volleyball • Common misconception • Sitting Volleyball is a disability sport played by people in wheelchairs • In fact Sitting Volleyball is • A fast and exciting sport, played sitting on the floor by men and women of all ages and players with and without a disability
Why Sitting Volleyball? • Increasing demand for the sport from a range of groups: • Schools (mainstream & special education) • Disability groups • Multi-sport groups • Military and recovery charities • There are a number of reasons for this but the main ones are: • Increased demand for inclusive/disability sports – SV perfect! • Easily adaptable • Little equipment required (cheap!)
National Overview • One of the fastest growing Paralympic sports in England • International competition – Players have a physical impairment • Domestic competition - Able bodied players & players with a physical impairment • Grassroots – Anyone can play! • 2 Teams competed at London 2012 • 10 teams competing regularly in the National Grand Prix • New clubs being established across the country
Local Overview • Black Country & Staffordshire is one of Volleyball England’s 5 investment zones. • One club currently running in Staffordshire • Newcastle Staffs VC • New team bit already competing in the highest tier. • Other activity happening across Black Country and Staffordshire • Predominantly adapted sessions

Movement and Introducing the Game • Movement • Encourage movement from the very beginning • Hands on the floor ready to move • Introducing the game • Keep the ball off the ground! • Encourage teamwork • Encourage height on the ball
Volley • 2 hands (where possible) • Take the ball around the forehead • Spread hands around the ball • Elbows bent and out • Extend the elbows and ‘push’ the ball out
Dig • Create a flat platform using the forearms • Thumbs together • Don’t swing the arms • let the ball rebound • Shrug the shoulders to direct the ball
Spike / Hit • Move towards the net and use body weight as momentum • Legs usually bent to the side • Hit the ball down with 1 hand • Open hand • Elbow back like pulling a bow • Reach up and swing through
Block • Legs can go under the net and usually sideways • Reach up and place hands over the net • Hands close together • Angle hands into court
Serve • Buttocks behind the service line • Over-arm • Face the net • Toss the ball level with hitting shoulder • Hit the ball with an open hand • Under-arm • Sit sideway – hitting arm away from the court • Small toss the ball with non-hitting hand • Hit the ball with a closed fist
Sitting Volleyball Basics The only key things for a game of sitting volleyball are: • 2 teams • A net / divide • A ball / round object • Players ‘sitting’ down • Keep the ball off the ground
Adapting the Game • The STEP process can be used to adapt the game. • From a basic format, adaptions can be made to move it towards conventional sitting volleyball: • Vary the ball • Encourage more technique • Encourage 3 touches • Introduce more rules/conditions
STEP Examples • Ball • Net • Court size • Team size • Volleyball Technique v Catch & Throw • Serve v throw v feed • Rotations v mixing positions • Players in wheelchairs
School Games Format • Adapted game developed with YST to make it as inclusive as possible • Uses a beach ball and relatively simple rules • Can be used and adapted further with a range of groups
