The Audio Archives • 131 open reel audio tapes • 1977- 1990 • Few tapes with accompanying programs • Inconsistent marking on tape container or reels • Stored in library facility with controlled environment • Several requests every year
The Audio Archives • Priority concern in 2010 • Audio tape degradation • Playback (equipment scarcity) • Preservation issues • “sticky shed” syndrome • print through
The Audio Archives • All tapes reformatted to digital audio • Three copies of each reel • Preservation Master Level: 24bit/96khz, BWF • Access Master Level: 16bit/44.1khz, BWF • Access Copy Level: 192kbps , MP3, additional EQ to normalize audio level • All on one giant hard drive • And…preserved but still inaccessible
What do we have? • DAYS of audio, very little data to match • Inconsistent sound • Original capture may be poor • Ambient sound • As RM moves, he comes in an out • Performances consistently good • Tape degradation results in drop out
Enter Avalon • Open source project to develop a system to manage and provide access to large collections of digital audio and video • Grant funded (IMLS & Mellon Foundation) and headed by NU and IU • Direct descendant of Variations Digital Music Library at IU
The IT Nerd Slide • Single item or batch media and metadata ingestion • Support for a variety of authentication schemes • Flexible access control for group, user management and admin accounts • Full mobile support • Integration with course management systems • User tools for making playlists and clips, and working with transcripts and annotations • Discovery using faceted search and browse
Need for Metadata • Hired grad student in clarinet performance to listen to all audio • Made note of works, performers, guest lectures, dates, etc. • 2 years of labor • Guidance from Steve Cohen, Prof of Clarinet
Who is listening? • From Google Analytics: • 5582 page hits since launch in September 2014 • 80 % of page hits originate in US (top cities: Houston, Evanston, Chicago, NY, Denton, Indy) • Remaining 20 % made up of 55 other countries – all continents • Of the 64 individual master classes, 55 (86%) have been accessed at least once
Publicity • Presentation at ClarinetFest 2012 in Lincoln NE • News blurb in The Clarinet (June 2014)
