  2. The First Trimester of Pregnancy By: Beth, Olivia, Jen, Abby, Catherine, Kate, Sarah, Kate, Tim, Olivia, Ali, Taylor, Mary, and Allie

  3. Features Week 4: The placenta develops Week 6: Umbilical cord develops, first heart beat begins, buds for arms and legs form Week 8: elbows and feet begin to grow, teeth develop under gums

  4. Features, continued Week 9: Bones and cartilage begin to develop, the fingers are short and webbed Week 10: It’s moving!!! Most joints have been formed Week 11: Now considered a fetus, blood begins to circulate between the baby and the uterus, placenta starts to function Week 12: Fingers and toes separate, hair and nails begin to grow, genitals take on gender characteristics

  5. Organs • Most of the organs like kidneys, liver, pancreas, bladder, intestines, bronchi, and skin have formed by the end of the first trimester

  6. How Long? • Week 7: baby is 1/3 of an inch long or the size of a grain of rice • Week 12: baby is 2 inches long • At the end of the first trimester the baby will weigh approximately half of a pound

  7. Senses • All sense organ have begun to form, but it will be many weeks before they are completed to the point where the baby will be able to use them

ExtraInfo • Week 5: embryo has three layers: the ectoderm, endoderm, and the mesoderm and the skin remains transparent • Week 11: blood will begin to circulate in between the baby and the uterus • Week 12: kidneys begin to form and excrete urine and the muscles in the intestinal wall practice digesting food • During the first trimester the brain and head grow rapidly. “Ridges demarcate the three sections of the brain.” –www.   12. Features • The following begin to develop: head-face, eyes, retina, eyelids and eyebrows, ears, bones in the middle ear, nostrils • vocal cords, intestines, pancreases, arms, hands, fingernails, hair, legs, toenails, fat, placenta, brain, muscles.

  13. Organs • Week 17: Heart may be pumping up to 25 quarts of blood each day • Week 18: Prostate glands grow in boys. • Week 20: Uterus starts to develop in baby girls • Week 21: Heart strengthens

  14. Weight and Inches • 4 months: the baby’s length is 4.5 inches • 5 months: the baby’s length is 10 inches. • 6 months: the baby’s length is 12 inches and weighs more than a 1 pound

  15. Developed Senses • Eyes and ears develop and move to their proper position throughout the trimester • Week 26: brain waves for sight and sound • Week 27: eyes start opening and retinas start growing

  16. Extra Info! • Baby’s bones begin to harden • Baby is moving a lot but the mother cannot always feel these movements • The baby’s head is half the size of the body • Fine hair is all over the baby’s body • Baby’s eyes are large and opened

  20. Body Features • The eyebrows and eyelashes finish forming and eyes function • Hair on head continues to grow • Leg actually starts to look like a leg, a little bony • More body fat is collecting around bones • The arms are small but the bones are growing

Organs • During the third trimester of pregnancy almost all organs have formed • Only the lungs need to be developed more because if the baby was born now it would have a hard time breathing • By then end of the third trimester the baby is ready to be born because all essential organs are in place lifedynamics.com

  22. Length & Weight • The average weight from weeks 28-40 is 2 to 7.5 lbs. • The average length from weeks 28-40 is 14.8 to 20 inches

  23. SENSES • By week 32, the baby is up to 4 pounds and all five sense are functional

  24. EXTRA INFO • In 2005 nearly 500,000 babies born before the 3 trimester did not gain all their normal functions • Albert Einstein was born in the beginning of the 3 trimester • 82% of twins weigh less than 6 pounds
