  2. The Parent Empowerment Program Who are we? Our goals. The goal is to help parent change their child’s negative behavior while building better relationships with them. Emphasis is placed on the importance of teaching parents how to regain their child’s respect, while increasing responsible behavior. • The Parent Empowerment Program is a parent education program. • A series of 12 sessions designed to empower parents in reclaiming and retaining their power as authority figures in their homes.

  3. What we cover. Understanding power in family systems Child development Listening & problem solving skills Exposing ways parents give up their power Understanding guilt & enabling Identifying sources of parental power Teaching strategies to increase the effectiveness of discipline

  4. How it works. • General parenting information is provided in a group format to help parents better understand: • The nature of children • How to build better relationships • Patterns of family dysfunction • More efficient and effective approaches to structure and discipline

How it works. • Much of the focus is on understanding and changing family patterns of communication. • Because communication is a universal theme for all parents, no one is excluded from participating. • This creates a diversity of participants, and therefore, the potential for diversity of solutions.

  6. Our History The Parent Empowerment Program is a “grass roots” program that has been evolving for the last eleven years. Its effectiveness for the parents of the Juvenile Drug Court Program launched a county-wide effort to provide this program to all interested parents in Clackamas County. In the time since, we have expanded our collaboration to include partnerships with North Clackamas, Oregon City, Gladstone, and West Linn-Wilsonville school districts, as well as the Juvenile and Community Health departments of Clackamas and Washington counties. We are currently working on a grant with Reed College to qualify for Best Practices status in the State of Oregon.

How do we apply to education? • The Parent Empowerment Program focuses on building relationships. • Teaching is all about building relationships, with colleagues, students, and families. • The tools provided in class apply to ALL relationships. They help build the trust needed for good communication and problem solving.
