  2. Why Does it Matter What Courses I Choose? • To prepare for college and career • Open the door to career pathways • Plan for life after high school • Make sure you will graduate from high school!

  3. What Courses Should Students Take? • Students should plan their schedules keeping the end in mind. (College, Career, Military) • Students should take courses that challenge them the most. • Students’ schedules should contain Honors and Advanced Placement (AP) courses. • Students must complete 22 credits (28 possible in a full-time four-year program)

  4. Graduation Requirements • English (4 credits) • Social Studies (3 credits) • Science (3 credits) • Math (4 credits) • Technology (1 credit) • Fine Arts (Music/Art/Theater) (1 credit) • Physical Education (1 credit) • Health (.5 credit) • Program of Study • World Language (2 credits) or • Career Development Program • Examples): Project Lead the Way, Child Development, Medical Careers, Thomas Edison, etc.

  5. Additional Graduation Requirements • Student Service Learning Hours (75 hours) • MD High School Assessments • Algebra • MISA (Grade 9), Biology HSA • English 10 • NSL Government

Planning for College/Career • Rigor, Complementary to What You’re Interested in • Mathematics courses beyond Algebra II and Geometry with a grade of a B or better • 3 - 4 credits of Science with a grade of a B or better • Most colleges want 2 or more credits in a World Language with a grade of a B or better while in High School

  20. 4 Year Course Plan • 1) Use yellow registration brochure to write out 4 Year Plan (back page) • 2) Meet with your counselor in February to review courses and 4 year plan in MyMCPS Portal

MyMCPS Online Course Request Portal to Register for Classes • Take your registration card home and use as a guide • Log on to MyMCPS Online Request Portal, follow the instructions page you were given today • You will enter your own course requests into the portal under the Class Registration link • Detailed instructions for registering your classes are on the Sherwood web site • If you do not have access to a computer, go to the Media Center • If you have ANY trouble-don’t worry! Your counselors will help you and will be meeting with you to check things over.

  22. Dates to Note Students & Parents enter course selections into MyMCPS Online Portal by January 24 February – Counselors meet with students to go over course selections April – Course selections will be sent home for verification June 15 – Deadline for Course Change Requests!!!
