The Four Year Curriculum The aim: To prepare students for interpreting/teaching professions in the four training years Stage 1: year 1 and 2 Language skill development Stage 2: years 3 and 4 Specializations
Changes in Stage One Curriculum Aims Before 2000 • To develop English language skills, academic language and ESP (economics) to participate effectively in the last two year studies After 2000 • To develop English language skills, academic language, study and research skills to participate effectively in the last two year studies
Opportunities for Students More training with academic/study/research skills Speaking: • academic discussions, presentations in tutorials, seminars • working with power points, flip charts, ect., • learning how to do research • developing team work = essential to work & further study Listening: • thorough practice in listening and note-taking • much wider range of mini-lecture topics e.g in the areas of anthropology, public administration, medicine, biology, physics
Opportunities for Students Writing: • training in different genres e.g cause and effect, argumentative • preparation for academic writing in specialization subjects, graduation papers, further studies and work • enhancement of skills e.g analyzing, synthesizing Reading: • wide range of topics • advanced reading skills • not only intensive but extensive reading in research projects
Opportunities for Teaching Staff Chance to reflect, to learn, especially being involved in projects, tutorial teaching, etc. Chance to work with new materials Chance to make use of their advantage: modern technology in teaching
