Luke 15:11-13(NKJV) 11Then He said: “A certain man had two sons. 12And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.’ So he divided to them his livelihood. 13And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, journeyed to a far country, and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living.
Provisions For The Journey Luke 15:11-13
Provisions For The Journey • The month of June is here which generally means the end of school • Of course the end of another school year means that there are many who will graduate and move on to the next phase of life • 7 from here are graduating HS and 5 from college
Provisions For The Journey • Whenever we graduate from something we automatically move on to something else • What each of these graduates are moving on to is a level of independence that is new to them, yet something they have prepared for
Provisions For The Journey This morning, we want to help prepare them for what they will face out in the world There are some words of wisdom from God’s word that will help them navigate life’s waters Let us take these provisions for the journey of life…
Provisions For The Journey • 1. Seek God & His kingdom first • “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you” (Matt. 6:33) • Jesus here promised to take care of our needs as long as we seek Him first • Through all you do in your life, don’t let anyone or anything come before God
Provisions For The Journey • 1. Seek God & His kingdom first • Not only will God be a help to you in this life, but He is the only way to the next life (John 14:6) • Satan’s #1 goal will be to pull you away from God • Satan wants to see you put God on the backburner or way down the list
Provisions For The Journey • 1. Seek God & His kingdom first • Proverbs 3:5-7 • Don’t ever get too big for God • True success in this life in all that you do will come with the help of God • Don’t forsake the one who made the greatest sacrifice for your benefit
Provisions For The Journey • 2. Treat others with respect • This is a lesson that we all probably learned from the time we were little • However, we may have done this at times simply because we were told we had to • One constant in life is that you will always have to interact with others
Provisions For The Journey • 2. Treat others with respect • “Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them…” (Matt. 7:12) • When we show respect we will be shown respect • Learn to love people and life will be much easier (Matt. 22:39)
Provisions For The Journey • 3. Never rest on your laurels • Basically this phrase means don’t become so satisfied with what you’ve accomplished that you stop working to improve who you are • Yes, graduating is a wonderful accomplishment, but there is so much more out there for you to achieve
Provisions For The Journey • 3. Never rest on your laurels • Philippians 3:12-16 • Paul had done some great things, but he wasn’t content with that • He never felt like he had “arrived” • That’s what distinguishes the greatest among us, when they continue to strive for greater things
Provisions For The Journey • 4. Communicate with God • Something that will help each of us tremendously through life is keeping the lines of communication open with God • That involves talking to God through prayer early and often, and not just in emergencies (I Thess. 5:17)
Provisions For The Journey • 4. Communicate with God • We have been given an openinvitation to the throne room of God (Heb. 4:16) • That’s a privilege that we should take advantage of • We also need to be sure that we allow God to speak to us through His word(I Tim. 4:13-16)
Provisions For The Journey • 4. Communicate with God • His word contains all that we need in both life and godliness (II Pet. 1:3) • It will thoroughly equip us for every good work (II Tim. 3:17) • It will also provide us with much knowledge, wisdom and comfort
Provisions For The Journey • 5. Be a good steward • God is going to bless you in this life (Js. 1:17) • You are going to be the steward of many things such as your health, your family, material goods, your job, friendships, etc. • Take care of those things!
Provisions For The Journey • 5. Be a good steward • “Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful” (I Cor. 4:2) • Can you be trusted with what God has given you? (Lk. 16:10-12) • Can your boss, your spouse, your friends trust you?
Provisions For The Journey • 6. WorkHard • If you want something in life, work hard to achieve it • Something that isn’t worked for is not appreciated like something that is • Paul tells us that we should work, and that if a man doesn’t work he shouldn’t eat (II Thess. 3:6-10)
Provisions For The Journey • 6. Work Hard • He also tells us that if someone isn’t working then they are likely doing things that are not productive • Solomon said that whatever we set our hands to do that we should do it with our might (Ecc. 9:10) • When this life ends, so does our work
