Benchmark • Compare the causes and effects of the early modern democratic revolutions, including the American Revolution, French Revolution, Haitian Revolution, and South American revolutions
American Revolution • What: American Colonies rebelled against Great Britain • When: 1775 to 1783 • Sig: first colony to declare independence, led to other colonies becoming independent
Past Movements • Protestant Reformation-Separatists, Puritans • Enlightenment-founding fathers used ideals, put them into practice. • Natural rights, social contract • Industrial Revolution-over population, send to colonies
Background • French and Indian War ended in 1763 • Who fought in it? • Great Britain won, gathered a huge debt • How do they pay for it? • Tax Colonies.
Why Tax Colonies? • British paid for their protection • Colonies need to start “pulling their load”
Events Leading Up To Revolution • 1763-Chief Pontiac led an attack against English settlers. • British issued Proclamation Line of 1763. • No one can live West of Appalachian Mtns. • Upset Colonists as violation of rights.
Various Acts • 1764-Currency Act-forbid Colonies from printing paper money. • Upset and was a step in uniting Colonies. • 1765-StampAct-tax on paper goods. • First direct tax on Colonies.

Why Did Colonists Rebel? • Salutary Neglect-from 1600-1763, British left the Colonists alone. • Colonists ruled themselves, paid taxes to colonial governments. • British didn’t enforce policies. • Caused Colonists to feel rights were being taken away. “No taxation without representation.” • Influenced by Enlightenment ideas.
Effects of American Revolution • Colonies won and gained Independence-1783. • Led to a model democratic type of government, constitutional. • “All men created equal” natural rights spread throughout the world. • Embodiment of Enlightenment. • Led to revolutions around world.
