  2. What is an interloper? • “Good,” snarled Georg, “good. We fight this quarrel out to the death, you and I and our foresters, with no cursed interlopers to come between us. Death and damnation to you, Ulrich von Gradwitz.” • An interloper is one who interferes or meddles in the affairs of others. • Why did the author decide on this as a title for the short story? • Which of the characters can be described as an interloper?

  3. Setting and Conflict • Where is the story set? • How does this setting add to the plot? • How does it affect the mood and tone of the story? • What types of conflict can be found within the story? Provide evidence.

  4. Choices & Consequences • Why was Ulrich not able to shoot at his enemy? • What did Ulrich tell Georg? What do you think prompted this change of heart? • How did Georg respond? Why do you think he had a similar change of heart? • How would the story be different if it were told from the point of view of one of the men?

  5. So it goes. • What do you think happened to them? Why? • Do you think it is fitting that the two men, who were hunting each other are discovered by wolves rather than by rescuers? Why?
