Black Holes in Brief: A look at current theories By Angelica L. McNerny
Summary • What is a black hole? • Hawking’s Conjecture • Wormhole theory • Fluctuations in the event horizon • Black hole residue • Where are they? • Questions
What is a black hole? • Point in space massive enough to devour light itself • Has an event horizon • Two kinds • Stellar- mass • Supermassive
Hawking’s Conjecture • Stephen Hawking suggests that black holes evaporate • This leads to the destruction of information • Throws physics on its head
Worm Hole Theory • Information travels through the black hole and out a worm hole in another universe • Implies information from other universes enters our own • Leads to a chaotic conclusion
Fluctuating Event Horizon • Suggests event horizon is not necessarily stable • Takes into consideration the evaporation of a black hole • Allows information to periodically escape
Black Hole Residue • Particles left over from evaporated black holes • Three dimensional • Would contain immense amount of information • Many scientists disagree with it • Quantum physics says this would destroy the universe • Scientists suggest it is more likely that we are just not looking close enough
Where are They? • One at the center of the Milky Way • Found using Keck and European Southern Observatory’s New Technology telescopes • Observed movement of stars to deduce its existence
