Initial Cuts • Place the rat in the tray with its ventral surface facing you. • Lift up a fold of skin under the chin and puncture the skin.
Initial Cuts CORRECT! • Slide the bottom tip of the scissors into the subcutaneous area under the skin. • Begin cutting along the lines indicated in the diagram on the previous page and in your lab. Pretend you are cutting off a t-shirt from a body and you don’t want to cut the persons skin. Be careful not to cut in the skeletal muscles under the skin. INCORRECT!
Observe the Loose Connective (Areolar Tissue) Firmly and slowly, separate the skin from the muscle using a razor blade. DO NOT CUT THROUGH ANY MUSCLE!!!! Answer questions 37-38.
Continue cutting… The head is the trickiest part. You’ll need to pull on the skin, but don’t pull too hard. One student grew inpatient and pulled the head off.
Finish cutting • Spray the rat with preservative. • Put the skin back on the rat. • Spray the rat again, bag it and store it. Clean and dry all of your equipment.
