Hockey History • Organized Hockey was first played in 1886 in Windsor, Nova Scotia, Canada. • Click on the moose to see Windsor • Hockey is similar to Field Hockey in the skills of passing, stick handling and shooting at a goal. • The first hockey game to take place in the USA was in 1893 when Yale University took on John Hopkins University. • The NHL is the professional league in the USA. • There are 30 total teams in the NHL with 24 of them being American, the other 6 are from Canada. Hockey Rules 1. The stick must always be carried below the waist 2. Absolutely no checking 3. Lifting another players stick with your stick is not allowed, it’s a safety hazard.4. When a goalie makes a save, offensive players must leave the goal crease.5. Eye guards are available upon request.6. Be Safe and Have Fun!!!

Stick Handling Skills • Hand position • Foot position • Stance Click on the arrows to learn the proper technique and see a picture for each position. Once you feel comfortable with each skill click the check mark.
Proper Hand Position Left handed position Right handed position Dominant Hand Hands are spaced evenly apart Your hands should be spaced out on the stick as shown. Your top hand (non-dominant) should be close to the end of the stick. Your dominant hand (the hand you use most often) will be on the bottom part of the stick.
Proper Foot Position Shoulder width apart Weight on the balls of your feet Feet should be shoulder width apart. You should have your weight on the balls of your feet and be ready to move.
Proper Stance Head Up Head Up Hips bent Hips bent Knees bent Knees bent Puck out in front Puck out in front On the balls of your feet Puck is out in front of you, your head is up. Your body is in the ready position with your weight on the balls of your feet, your knees and hips are bent.

Movement 1. Start with your weight on your back foot and the puck at your side just past your back foot 2. Begin pushing the puck towards your target 3. Follow through as you transfer your weight to your front foot
