The Liberator • The Liberator’s stated that slaves should be emancipated immediately • For more than 30 years he passionately spoke out against slavery and tried to advocate their rights • He believed that African Americans had the same rights and were equal to white citizens • His simple philosophy said that those against his cause should take it from the view point of the black man
Garrison’s Famous Quote “I will be as harsh as truth and as uncompromising as justice… I am earnest-I will not equivocate-I will not excuse-I will not retreat a single inch- AND I WILL BE HEARD!”
Anti-SlaverySociety • Garrison created the American Anti-Slavery Society, organizations dedicated to promoting the emancipation of slaves • He was very stubborn with very strong opinions: • He believed in the Anti-Slavery Society shouldn’t be associated with a political party. • He thought that women should be allowed in • He also believed the Constitution supported slavery
Anti-Slavery Society • Many disagreed with Garrison’s beliefs • In 1840, two other organizations formed within the society and then became rivals. • The Liberty Party, which was a political organization • The American and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society, which didn’t allow women in.
