3. Classroom / Lab • Classroom instruction – studying and learning subject matter in the classroom • Laboratory instruction – learning by demonstrations and practice in shops, greenhouses,and nurseries, and other settings.

FFA • FFA – the club or organization that develops leadership and citizenship skills. • Communication skills are developed through speaking at career development events such as public speaking, creed, parliamentary procedure, extemporaneous speaking, agricultural sales and poultry, dairy and livestock oral reasons.

9. Leadership Development in FFA • Serve as an officer • Serve as a committee chair • Participate in Career Development Events such as Parliamentary Procedure • Attend local, regional, state, and national leadership workshops • PARTICIPATE!!!

Career Development Events • Competitive events designed to help you expand your potential for career success • CDE’s will be a large part of this class • We will focus primarily on horticulture related CDE’s but may shift to others as time and your interest dictates • In-class CDE’s will practice during class time

11. Joining FFA • FFA Dues are $20 • These dues include your local, state, and national dues. • You will also begin receiving (in August if a new member) the FFA New Horizons magazine on a monthly-bi-monthly basis for one year. • Become eligible for the $2 million in scholarships the FFA awards each year

13. Joining FFA FAQ’s • Do I have to join? • No, however you are strongly encouraged to do so. Typically (almost without fail) those students who join do better in class. • Why is that? • FFA gives you opportunities to apply skills learned in class not otherwise available.

14. Joining FFA FAQ’s 2 • What if I decide not to join, how does that affect my grade? • Participation in the CDE’s is one of two choices for that portion of the class. The other will be to do an independent, comprehensive research project on a horticulture topic. On days in class where we are practicing primarily for CDE’s you will work on your project. • In short, joining FFA has no direct impact on your grade. I don’t look at who is and who isn’t a member when I calculate grades.

15. FFA FAQ’s 3 • What if I want to join but don’t have $15? • See me on an individual basis to work something out. If you want to join, and can prove you can’t afford $15 then we will work something out. • When is the last date to pay dues? • February 23rd will be the last day. Checks should be made out to KHS FFA.

17. Leadership Qualities • A. Integrity – honesty • B. Courage – willing to go forward under difficult conditions • C. Management – using people, resources and processes to reach a goal • D. Unselfishness – placing the desires and welfare of others above yourself

19. Public Speaking • Why do we learn about public speaking? • Answer- • Because almost every job requires you to speak to people! Oral communication skills are one of the most important skills identified by employers in recent surveys.

20. Types of Speeches 1. To inform – gives knowledge or information to audience 2. To persuade – convinces people to believe or do something 3. To integrate – pep talks, welcome speeches, introduction 4. Prepared – speech is written and learned 5. Extemporaneous – speech with little or no preparation

21. Variables to Consider when Speaking 1. Purpose of the speech – Why are you giving the speech? 2. Audience – What group is hearing the speech? 3. Occasion – What is the event? 4. Content – What is in the speech? 5. Composition – How is the speech written and organized?

Oral Delivery Variables a. voice – pitch, quality, articulation, pronunciation, force b. stage presence – appearance, poise, attitude, confidence, ease before audience, personality, posture c. power of expression – fluency, sincerity, emphasis, directness, communicative ability, conveyance of thought and meaning d. response to questions – accurate, ability to think quickly e. general effect – interesting, understandable, convincing, pleasing, holds attention

23. Parts of a Speech • A speech is just like a paper you write • It has 3 main parts • Introduction • Capture attention • Body • Give information • Conclusion • Summarize, “take home message”

24. Assignment • Prepare a 1 minute speech about yourself. • There should be an introduction, body, and conclusion. • Try to tell us something we don’t already know. • You have 5 minutes to prepare.
