  1. Cooperatively Catching Critters: An Alliteration of Physical Education Ideas and Activitiesby Jeff JacobsMethacton School DistrictSHAPE America National District Teacher of the YearB Berks County Intermediate Unit In-Service Mulhenberg High SchoolOctober 10, 2016

  2. Important Information ! This powerpoint and all activities are available on my website.

  3. Introduction • Understand that K-12 Physical Education is a very wide-ranging topic. • Understand that we all come from different schools with different climates and cultures. • Understand that we all have different backgrounds and are in different phases of our careers. • Understand we all have different facilities, equipment, situations, likes and dislikes.

  4. As a result of that… It is difficult to provide a program that can exclusively meet the needs of all participants. However, one thing that I have learned is that I can walk away with something worthwhile from every presentation I attend. If you leave today with one or two good ideas that you can implement, you should consider today a success. It is all in how one approaches the learning experience.

  5. Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference! We learn by doing …………… ~ John Dewey

  6. Objectives Participants will be able to: • describe and apply the practices of Quality Physical Education. • understand the positive connection between exercise and academic achievement. • learn a progression of moderate-to-vigorous physical activities that can be applied to a wide variety of lesson. • consider ways to adapt these activities in a way that best works for them and their students.

  7. Educating Students to be “Physically Literate” The goal of Physical Education is to develop individuals who have the knowledge, skills and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity.

  8. Quality Physical Education • Maximum participation – enough equipment so each student has his/her own • 50% or more should be moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) • Based on state-standards / national standards • Has an assessment piece • (Make connections to classroom learning)

  9. Quality Physical Education… ….is not sports! Only 7% of our children are athletes. Why do we and why should we focus on this small group?

  10. Progression Three of the most important skills our students must possess in order to be successful in the work force of the future are: • critical thinking • collaboration, and • clear communication. How well can you work with others?

  11. Switcheroo Objective: To move from 1 parachute to another when your color is called. Concepts: ~ clockwise ~ counterclockwise

  12. Critter in the Web Objective: How many times can your group toss and catch a critter using your parachute. You are the spider, the chute is your web and the critter is lunch! mmm lunch!

  13. Critter Grab Objective: Work with your group to toss the critter in the air and take turns catching it with your hands.

  14. Critter Soup Objective: How many critters can your group accumulate by working together to toss the critter in the air and take turns catching it with your hands.

  15. Stealing Critters for Soup Objective: To see which group can accumulate the most critters by: • “stealing” critters from other groups • working together to toss the critter in the air • taking turns catching it with your hands.

  16. Soup Line Objective: How many critters can the entire group accumulate by using parachutes to toss and catch the critters from chute-to-chute?

  17. Chicken Coops Objective: Using 6 hoops, each group cooperatively constructs a chicken coop. Upon completion, each group member must crawl through the coop without knocking it down. If it collapses, the group starts again. Extension: How many ways can you move through the coop?

  18. Angry Birds • volleyball net represents the sling shot • bowling pins or cones represent the pigs • chicken coops made from hula hoops represent the shelter around the pigs • yarn balls represent the objects launched by the sling shot

  19. Do You know the requirements for Health and Physical Education at the State and Federal Level? • Pennsylvania – School Code Chapter 4 contains the rules and regulations governing Health and Physical Education. • Waivers (PA) – Not permitted! • ESSA– Every Student Succeeds Act
