  3. Higher Education in Austria I • 236.000 students in higher education (academic year 2003/04) • 40.000 international students (more than 16%) • 924 students from Croatia registered at Austrian higher education institutions Ulrich Hörmann, Kick-off Meeting, Croatia for Bologna, 14 January 2005

Importance for Austrian Institutions • Substantial contribution towards the Europeanisation & Internationalisation of HE • Competition with other European (and worldwide) providers will become tougher in future • Challenge for the future: to reduce the gap between the existing legal framework and reality. Legal Framework • Amendment of University Studies Act in 1999 • Introduction of a new Universities Act in 2002 • This act created the legal basis for all Bologna items such as • Bachelor and master programmes • ECTS • Diploma supplement • Joint and double degrees Ulrich Hörmann, Kick-off Meeting, Croatia for Bologna, 14 January 2005

Implementation I • Diploma supplement issued on request; starting with July 2005 obligatory (in German and English) • Currently 172 Bachelor and 217 Master Programmes following the new system (about 25% of all study programmes) Ulrich Hörmann, Kick-off Meeting, Croatia for Bologna, 14 January 2005

Promotion of Mobility I Social dimension: support measures for needy students increased • European Union Programmes • especially Erasmus but also Leonardo and EU 3rd country programmes • extensive range of scholarship programmes for students (incoming and outgoing), e.g. Ulrich Hörmann, Kick-off Meeting, Croatia for Bologna, 14 January 2005
