  4.  1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.  2 Now the earth was (Possibly “became”) formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.NIV

  5. As with any good narrative writing, the setting and characters are established in the beginning of the story. God starts the story of our history out with darkness and the substance of the uninhabited Earth.

  6. He also introduces us to the main character in the story, Himself.Whatever happened between verse one and verse two, God was there!

  7. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.John 1:1 ______ ______

  8. Verse three God starts to speak.God created the universe form nothing and did so without taxing His powers or energy.

  11. Hebrews 11:3By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

  12. By creating light and darkness in vv. 3-5 and landmasses vv. 9-10, God created time and space.

  16. Each day of the story builds until we get to God’s climactic creation, Man.This also was a unique concept of a god. In that day, gods supposedly used man to bring them rewards to themselves or to keep the gods for physical labor.

  17. The god of Abraham and Moses wanted someone to communicate with on a basis of mutual love.He cherished His creation.Compare what you know about the Greek and Roman gods and our God.

  18. God’s Image – imago Dei It is Most import to basic core beliefs that we were created in God’s image, and that we were given dominion over this Earth. Human life comes with the privilege of communicating with God.

  19.  v. 27 So God created man in his own image,        in the image of God he created him;        male and female he created them.

  21. Chapter 2Genesis 2 goes from the broad details of chapter 1 to a more detailed account of creation.

  22. It begins with an important literary structural devise. “These are the generations of the heavens and the earth.” generations - - - toledot means offspring or history.

  23. Elsewhere it introduces either genealogy or a personal history. The phrase occurs eleven times in the book of Genesis. Aside from other significant reasons the phrase is thought to introduce a new unit each time it is listed.

  24. The theme of chapter 2 is God’s love for his human creation. Godmakes every effort to see that Adam, and soon Eve, are happy, and yet in chapter 17 he says, “Thou shall not eat…” He left the door open for them to make the right choice.
