Melting Gummi Bears By matt Waterhouse and Callum Obrien
Aim • The aim of this experiment is to see which coloured gummi bear will dissolve the quickest out of blue, green and red.
Hypothesis • I think that all of the gummi bears will dissolve at the same time unless of an error from a piece of an equipment or a mistake is made.
Safety • Boiled water will be dangerous if spilled • Tripod will be hot • Glass from beaker may smash • Be careful with the matches • the thermometer as it may smash
Apparatus • 100ml beaker • Gauze mat • Tripod • Bunsen burner • Heat proof mat • Thermometer • Matches • Gummi Bears
Method • Put the tripod on a heat proof mat next to the gas plug. • Put the gauze mat on top of the tripod. • Place the Bunsen burner under the gauze mat. • Plug in the tube that runs from the Bunsen burner into the gas plug. • Fill up the beaker with water to 50ml and place it on the gauze mat. • Get one person to light the match and put it over the Bunsen burner and get the other person to turn the gas on. • Put the beaker with the water in it and heat the water to 100 degrees Celsius. Use the thermometer to see when it is boiled. • Place the uncoloured lemonade flavoured gummi bear in water first as this is the control. • Time how long it takes to dissolve the gummi bear. • When the gummi bear has dissolved, write the time it took in a table. An Example of a table is in the next slide. • When dissolved, tip the water out and fill it with 50ml of water and boil it, melt one more time. • Repeat these steps with the red, greenand yellow gummi bears. • Boil each gummi bear 2 times. • Average out the results to find the time for each gummi bear. • FINISHED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Conclusion My hypothesis was wrong as the green gummi bear was the fastest to melt. the data could have been wrong because of reaction time of stopping the stopwatch and if the gummi bear was not over the Bunsen burner flame.
