What is it? • Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down is a dark romantic comedy. • It stars Antonio Banderas (Ricky) and Victoria Abril (Marina) • The story follows Ricky, a recently released patient from a mental hospital, who hunts down Marina, a porn film star he once had sex with, and tries to convince her to be his wife. When that fails, he kidnaps her to convince her of his love. • It was released in 1989 and is set in Madrid, Spain

  3. success • Released in 1990, the film became a domestic success • Highest grossing domestic film of the year. • Popular with critics • Earned over $4 million in the USA. • Launched Almodovar into the American spotlight

  4. Main themes • Sexual Deviance • Obsession • Violence towards women • Counter Culture • Disability

  5. Similarities to Talk to her • Man with notable mental issues who tries to justify his actions • Women sexualised • Main character in trouble with the system. (Jail, Mental institution) • Small world • Few characters • Very few locations • Visual puns • Man has a childish mentality

  6. Film form • Long Takes • High Key Lighting • Expositional dialogue • Stationary camera or smooth movements • Live music scenes • Saturated images

  7. Personal Response • Although it is a dark romantic comedy with a farcical plot we did not find it to be humorous • We felt very unsympathetic towards the main character due to his predatory nature • The only real comedic parts of the film were given by the director character • The plot was very unbelievable but as it is farcical that is somewhat expected
