Mobile Wound Technology Ros Probert Princess Alexandra Hospital Brisbane
Mobile Wound Technology ResearchPartnership • QH & PAH • HSAGlobal (HSA) • Fujitsu Australia
Research/Pilot proposal • Use Mobile Web based point of care technology • Deliver evidence based wound care at the bedside • Remove barriers created by location, skill shortage or information access • Image management system • Replace paper based Wound Assessment Tool
Research proposal • Promote real time collaboration • Enable innovation • Provide secure mobile connection hosted externally
Expected results • Improve clinical outcomes and nursing efficiency • Interdisciplinary collaboration • Clinician ability to monitor wounds in real time • Improve clinical consumable selection • Monitor cost of wound care
Research proposal • 5 month trial of MWC (initial pilot was 3 months) • 2 specialised units • 6 week Implementation • Planned completion January 2009 • GO LIVE actually occurred on time - 2nd February 2009
C5 - Motion Wireless Technology Why? • (software runs on any windows device) • Portability • Less “lose ability” • Other applications • Constant connection • Organisational
How does MWC work Screens • Profile • Wound • Assess • Treatment • Summary • Viewer • Administration
Outcomes Benefits • Wireless technology – information at the bedside • Real time data analysis • Print care plan at point of service delivery • Immediate cumulative analysis of all costs • Image review • Accurate monitoring of progress • Wound type cost review • Measure time to healing
Outcomes • Organisational • Clinical • Financial • Decrease Cost • Decrease Length of Stay
Outcomes Pilot Challenges • Introduction of new devices as well as new software • Real benefits only come when used by wide range of staff • Inability to implement modifications to software during a short term pilot
Conclusions - based on small sample from pilot • positive demonstration of decreased length of stay to date • positive evidence to support decreased healing time of wounds • Visual analysis of consecutive digital images demonstrates healing • Next step will be to use the pilot learnings and work with Fujitsu/HSA to plan and implement changes necessary for further rollout • Exciting to be involved in “cutting edge” technology
