Synchronous Asynchronous Distance Education:Modes of Interaction Same Time Different Place Different Time Different Place Space Same Time Same Place Different Time Same Place Time
Virtual Classroom Model“It’s all about communication” • Technology serves to facilitate teacher/student and student/student interaction at a distance • Enriched interactive communication through integrated voice, video, and data. • The Web plays a supporting role
Desktop Conferencing “virtual conference room” symmetric peer-oriented continuous presence few-to-few with spontaneous interaction Desktop Classroom “virtual classroom/ auditorium” asymmetric teacher/audience floor control one-to-many with controlled interaction A Different Interaction Model
MBone “Virtual Classroom” • Low cost - desktop computers + Internet • Scalable - IP multicast protocol • Fully integrated voice, video and data • Highly interactive • Classroom cost = ~ $50K • Receiver cost = ~ $2-4K

Lessons Learned • Technology must be transparent • Audio and whiteboard significantly more important than video in most cases • Continuous presence audio not good for “virtual classroom” • Use electronic “hand raiser” instead • Instructor must be able to point and draw • Synchronous delivery alone not good enough
