This document provides an overview of the current status and schedule of undulator tuning and fiducialization. It also discusses problems and repairs, as well as recent plans to increase the K adjustment range. The measurements and tuning accuracy are within tolerances, and there will be modifications to X and Y trajectory shims to address interference with the vacuum chamber. All undulators will be re-measured, re-fiducialized, and have the shims replaced by the end of November.

Outline • Undulator quad tuning and fiducialization status • Undulator tuning and fiducialization status and schedule • Problems / repairs • Extend K Adjustment Range X-trajectory shims Y-trajectory shims • Reference undulator measurements
Undulator Quadrupoles Strength And Harmonics Measurements
Coil Measurements • 15 Undulator Quads have been measured with the rotating coil. • 1 Undulator quad measured every 2 days. 19 quads left to measure = 38 work days. Final Magnet June 26th.
Magnetic Center Fiducialization Vibrating Wire System
Fiducialization Status • 8 Undulator quads fiducialized. • Schedule: 1 undulator quad measured every 1.5 days. 26 quads left to measure = 39 work days + 3 days for reference magnet check. Final magnet: June 30th.
Undulator Tuning And Fiducialization • Overview • The tuning is going well • Almost done with 33 (details to follow) • Mounting feet standardization is progressing • Problem with storage, need to re-fiducialize 15 undulators • Repairs of un-tunable undulators have started • Recent plan to increase K adjustment range • The measurements look good • Stable, low noise, … • Hall probe, short coil, long coil measurements agree • The reference undulator measurements are very stable
Undulator Measurement Status Done (6) (in Bldg. 33) Ready for feet (5) (in MMF) Fiducialization on CMM To be re-fiducialized (15) (in Bldg. 750) To be tuned (2) Repaired, in fine tuning 04/08 05/15/08 05/08 To be repaired (8) At Argonne (2) R.Ruland
Storage Temperature Problem Max temperature change -8 deg C Gap change during storage 1 micron average gap change Trajectories and field integrals fine, phase changes around 2 deg (ok), average gap change shifts axis (re-fiducialization required)
Repairs RequiredBefore repair 130µm Two areas to replace shims Ed Reese
After Repair 50µm Ed Reese
Tuning summary • Rough tuning done by the end of May. • Fine tuning done by the middle of June. • Re-fiducialization done by the end of September • Repairs start in May; finished by the end of year.
New: Extend K Adjustment Range • Originally, ±2.5 mm horizontal adjustment range required • New Bx shims allow ±6 mm horizontal good field region • Want to extend undulator horizontal adjustment range • Need to solve beam pipe clearance problems
Interference with vacuum chamber X-trajectory shim Cut material off • X-trajectory shims limit vacuum chamber “in”-motion to 2.5mm • Undulators tuned for ±6 mm • Shims to be modified to allow - 6mm motion and • Undulator tuning to be checked
Interference with vacuum chamber. Continued New Old Fix, new triangles on old strongback

Conclusion • 30 undulators went through rough tuning and 29 – through fine tuning processes. • MMF throughput is 2 devices/month. • Repairs of un-tunable undulators has started. • Tuning accuracy is within the tolerances. • The K adjustment range will be increased. • Due to interference with the vacuum chamber in off-axis position, X and Y trajectory shims will be modified/replaced on all undulators. • All undulators will be re-measured and re-fiducialized and have the shims replaced by the end of November.
