  3. Previous Nicknames • Old North State • The Land of the Sky • Tar and Turpentine State • Tar Heel State (present)

One Theory • Pine trees were common in North Carolina • A slit was made in tree and turpentine oozed out • Boiled the turpentine • Used it for tar and pitch and Other naval stores • Naval stores were really sticky • Once poor farmers worked in The turpentine they had no Shoes so their feet would be Covered in it

  5. Second Theory • In the battle of Bull Run, one Confederate general noticed the North Carolina regiment and said that they were so strong and so resilient that he described them as… “That regiment of North Carolinians must have tar on their heels to make them stick as they do.”

  6. Later on… • At first the NC boys were ashamed of the nickname • It represented poor

  7. How it stuck • Zebulon Vance visited the NC boys in Va before a battle (beloved by all North Carolinians) and addressed them “ I do not know how to address you boys. I can’t say fellow citizens because none of us are citizens of Va. I can’t say fellow soldiers because I’m not one. Therefore, I have concluded to address you as fellow Tar Heels.” The crowd erupted and it stuck

  10. Essay • By 1861 the North and South had grown so far apart that they saw themselves as two separate societies capable of making war on one another. Looking backing at the advantages and disadvantages of each side explain how they have become two separate nations. Think about: • Population • Jobs • Resources • Lifestyle • Beliefs
