  2. Bake • To cook in a oven with dry heat.

  3. Baste • To put a liquid, such as melted butter or a sauce on top, while cooking.

  4. Boil • To cook until bubble rise to the surface.

  5. Broil • To cook food very close to high heat source.

  6. Preheat • To heat an oven to the cooking temperature before putting food in the oven.

  7. Scald • Pour boiling liquid over food or to cook just before boiling.

  8. Simmer • To reduce heat and continue to cook.

  9. Steam • To cook with the steam vapors of boiling water.

  10. Skim • Remove the top from the liquid.

  11. Sauté • To cook in a small amount of fat.

  13. Alternate • Add a small amount of one item, then another.

  14. Beat • Quick mixing motion.

  15. Blend • To mix two or more ingredients to make one.

  16. Chop • To cut up in small uneven pieces.

  17. Core • To remove the center.

  18. Cream • To beat sugar and solid fat, such as butter, together until they are smooth, light and fluffy.

  19. Cube • To cut into cubes about ½ inch.

  20. Cut In • To mix shortening (fat) into flour by cutting the fat into tiny pieces with a pastry blender or knives.

  21. Dice • To cut into very small cubes.

  22. Dot • To scatter food items on top of another food.

  23. Fold • To Combine ingredients by sliding a spatula down through a mixture, gently lifting and turning the ingredients until blended.

  24. Grate • To cut food into thin, small pieces.

  25. Knead • To press and fold a ball of dough with the heels of your hands until the dough is smooth and elastic elastic.
