Programme Development • Critical review of the current programme • Consultation with stakeholders, staff, students, service users & carers at the Educational Development Unit (EDU) meetings • Reference to relevant policy drivers: - Darzi (2008) - Middleton (2008) - Black (2008) - CSP Charting the Future Project • Successful validation event May 2010
Module Changes New Modules • Level 1 - Principles of Exercise & Physical Activity • Level 2 - Health & Well Being • Level 3 - Contemporary Physiotherapy Practice Existing Modules • Reduced in size • Content updated • Clearer linking of transferrable skills e.g. Inter-professional working, Research, Reflection, Service Improvement
Changes related to Practice • Observation days - level 1 • Placement timing – level 2 & 3 • Portfolio • Learning Outcomes • Assessment documentation • PPOA – to be changed from this year on
Level 1 Observation Days • Suggested by practice, supported by students & academic staff • 3 days in a ward environment • Students in pairs • Preparation sessions before & review/reflection of learning after placement experience • Supported by band 5 staff • Directed learning using workbook
Placement Timing • Still 6 placements of 5 weeks duration • No change to 1st placement end of level 1 • Increase to 3 placements at level 2 • Reduce to 2 placements at level 3 • Reasons
Portfolio • To include personal, induction, academic, practice & inter-professional sections • Service user activity for level 2 placements to be used for reflective piece at end of level 2 • Information gathering on service improvement to contribute to the assessment in Contemporary Physiotherapy Practice module
Placement Learning Outcomes • Linked more overtly with KSF outcomes and HPC Standards of Proficiency • Same outcome headings for each placement but level of achievement required increases through levels • Learning outcomes for safety and professionalism exactly the same for all placements • Grouped into 4 sections each of which must be passed rather than stand alone to support appropriate pass/fail outcomes
Assessment Documentation(CPA form) • Improved user friendly format including more space for midway feedback • Learning outcomes and sections on assessment document are the same • Overall formative band rather than mark given for feedback alongside written feedback • Potential for failure declaration • Service users and carers feedback optional on assessment document
Professional Practice Oral Assessment(PPOA) • Week 4 instead of week 5 (5th placement) • Unseen to student (pref. NP but may be known to team) • Patient of similar type to those seen on placement • Patient details given to student 1 hour prior to PPOA • Focus on assessment plus some treatment as appropriate • Extra time for those on access database
