Renal colic, indications for admissionBMJ August 12 • Diagnostic uncertainty • Age over 60 or known arteriopathy (risk of AAA) • Inadequate pain control • Fever >37.5 • Solitary or transplanted kidney • Suspected bilateral stones • Impending renal failure • Inability to arrange early investigation or urological assessment

  2. Renal colic, investigationsBMJ August 12 • temperature • Urine dipstick • MSU • FBC and renal function • (CT KUB within 7 days)

  3. Renal colic, advice from Mr Rogawski • The majority of stones are in the lower 1/3 and tamsulosin increases the chance of expulsion (off label) • Co-prescribe tamsulosin with diclofenac • Contact radiology to request CT KUB if patient is not admitted
