  2. Where are they? (geography) • Apache are natives of the Southwest deserts mainly in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas and some were located across the border of northern Mexico.

  3. Apache Nation (Civics & Government) There are 13 different Apache tribes today: 5 in Arizona, 5 in New Mexico and 3 in Oklahoma. Tribes in Arizona and New Mexico live on their own reservation. Each tribe has it’s own government, laws, police and services but Apaches today are still US citizens and have to obey American law. In the past, each Apache tribe had it’s own chief. A chief isn’t like a president. His job was to settle arguments between all Apaches.

  5. People of Apache Men • Hunters, warriors and political leaders. • Leather war shirts. • Wore their hair at shoulder length. Women • In charge of the home and they built new houses. • Buckskin dresses. • Wore their hair long or in a bun. • Gathered nuts, seed and fruits.

  7. Apache children • Similar to children today. • More chores and less time to play. • Like to run footraces and play archery games. • Babies were carried in a cradleboard.

  8. Where did they live? • Apache people lived in wickiups. • wooden frames covered by a matting of brush and sometimes a buffalo-hide tarp • Some Apache tribes also lived in tipis.

  9. Vocabulary • Reservation-lands that belong to Indian tribes and are under their control. • Cradleboard- wooden cradles used to carry babies. • Wickiups-wooden frames covered by a matting of brush and sometimes a buffalo-hide tarp • Tipis-tent made of animal skins and wooden poles.
