I. Location • The Apache tribe moved down to the Sothern Plains of Texas from Canada. • There are two Apache tribes the Lipan and the Mescalero. • The Lipan tribe lived northwest of San Antonio. • The Mescalero tribe lived around Pecos and Rio Grande.
II. Dress • The Apache tribe didn’t tattoo, but they did use paint. • When it was hot the men wore breechcloth and the women wore deerskin skirts. • When it was cold the men and women wore leggings, moccasins, shirts, and ponchoes. • The women had long hair which they kept in a braid. • The men cut their hair on the left side level with the top of their ear. They let the right side grow out, but tied it up to be even with their shoulder.
III. How They Lived • The Apache got there food by hunting and gathering. • They hunted deer, antelope, javelina, rats, wild turkeys, and wild cattle. • They gathered plants like beans, squash, and pumpkins. There favorite vegtable was agave. • When they hunted buffalos they surrounded the buffalo then killed it.
IV. Homes • The Apache tribe lived in tepees. • They put sotol stalks in a circle, then they tied the poles together at the top, then they covered it with buffalo hide. • Some Apaches lived in homes called lodges.
V. Government • Unlike many Texas Natives, the Apaches were related through their mothers. • The bands were organized by a chief. • A
