Women Soldiers • -Both Union and Confederate did not allow women soldiers • -Women gave themselves masculine names and disguised themselves as men. • Estimated 250 women in Confederate army • -1862- at least four women converged on Antietam, Maryland. Before After
Women worked on Civil War camps made and distributed various supplies for the soldiers such as food and medical supplies.
Rose Greenhow • Spied for Confederacy • Sent a ten-word secret message to General Beauregard which helping him to win the battle of Bull Run. • Jefferson Davis credited her with winning this battle • Put in prison for her efforts
Belle Boyd(1843-1900) Hometown: Martinsburg, Virginia Confederate Spy
Belle Boyd • Crossed Union lines frequently delivering messages to General “Stonewall” Jackson • Alsodelivered medical supplies and confiscating weapons. • Provided valuable information to Generals Turner Ashby and "Stonewall" Jackson during Spring of 1862. • Helped them with Shenandoah Valley Campaign and the capture of Front Royal, Virginia on May 23, 1862 • Front Royal was a significant victory for Jackson • Imprisoned several times during war.
Clara Barton • Born December 25, 1821 • April 1862- After First Battle of Bull Run- established an agency to obtain and distribute supplies to wounded soldiers. • July 1862- she obtained permission to travel behind the lines, serving during the Siege of Petersburg and Richmond, Virginia. • Delivered aid to soldiers of both the North and South • 1864- appointed by Union General Benjamin Butler as the "lady in charge" of the hospitals at the front of the Army of the James. • Established the Red Cross • Organized a program for locating men listed as “missing in action”
Barbara Fritchie -Born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania -Unionist -Important figure in Civil War history -When she was 90 years old she waved the union flag in the middle of the street to try to block Stonewall Jackson’s troops as they went through Frederick. “Up rose old Barbara Frietchie then,Bowed with her fourscore years and ten;Bravest of all in Frederick town,She took up the flag the men hauled down;In her attic window the staff she set,To show that one heart was loyal yet.Up the street came the rebel tread,Stonewall Jackson riding ahead.” -Greenleaf Whittier , 1864
