  1. Tearing Down Our High Places What is Displacing God in Our Lives?

  2. Deuteronomy 12:1-4 • 1 “These are the statutes and judgments which you shall be careful to observe in the land which the Lord God of your fathers is giving you to possess, all the days that you live on the earth. 2You shall utterly destroy all the places where the nations which you shall dispossess served their gods, on the high mountains and on the hills and under every green tree. 3 And you shall destroy their altars, break their sacred pillars, and burn their wooden images with fire; you shall cut down the carved images of their gods and destroy their names from that place. 4 You shall not worship the Lord your God with such things.”

  3. Leviticus 26:30 • 30I will destroy your high places, cut down your incense altars, and cast your carcasses on the lifeless forms of your idols; and My soul shall abhor you.

  4. 2 Kings 23:19-20, 25 • 19Now Josiah also took away all the shrines of the high places that were in the cities of Samaria, which the kings of Israel had made to provoke the Lord to anger; and he did to them according to all the deeds he had done in Bethel. 20He executed all the priests of the high places who were there, on the altars, and burned men’s bones on them; and he returned to Jerusalem. . . . 25Now before him there was no king like him, who turned to the Lord with all his heart, with all his soul, and with all his might, according to all the Law of Moses; nor after him did any arise like him.

  5. Acts 17:16, 22-23 • 16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him when he saw that the city was given over to idols. • 22 Then Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious; 23 for as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you…”

  6. 3 Key Questions… • What is it that you let displace God’s rightful place in your life? • What would you not give up to serve the Lord? • What are you most passionate about (consumes your time, energy and affection)?

  7. Numbers 21:8-9 • 8 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live.” 9 So Moses made a bronze serpent, and put it on a pole; and so it was, if a serpent had bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived.

  8. 2 Kings 18:4 • 4 He removed the high places and broke the sacred pillars, cut down the wooden image and broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made; for until those days the children of Israel burned incense to it, and called it Nehushtan.

  9. Tearing Down Our High Places • Nation Is NATION Displacing God in your Life?

  10. Nationality • Are you more rooted in your national identity than your spiritual identity? – Gal. 3:26-29; Rom. 10:12 (Acts 22:25-29) • Which do you think of as “home” more – heaven or earth? – Heb. 11:13-16; 13:14; 1 Pet. 1:17; 2:11

  11. The Constitution & The Bill of Rights • Are you more vocal over constitutional abuses than you are perversions of Scripture? – cf. John 2:13-17; Jude 3 • Are you more passionate about your civil rights than you are the law of God? – cf.Rom. 4:14-23; 1 Cor. 8:13; Jas. 1:21-25

  12. Political Parties • Are you known more for your political identity than you are your spiritual identity? – cf. Phil. 3:2-7 (Acts 23:6-10) • Does loyalty to a political party hinder your ability to preach the gospel to every creature? – cf. Matt. 28:19-20; Mark 16:15-16 (Acts 10:28, 34-35)

  13. Freedom & Liberty • Do you value and equate your civil freedoms with your spiritual freedom? – cf. John 8:31-41; Rom. 13:1-7; Gal. 5:13 • Would you still worship God if the freedom to do so were constrained? – cf. Acts 4:17-31; 5:22-32, 40-42

  14. 2 Timothy 2:1-4 • 1 You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2 And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. 3 You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 4No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier.

  15. Colossians 3:1-2 • 1 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.
