  2. Author-Hannah Hurnard • Born in a Quaker family • She did not believed in the presence of God • Suffered from many disabilities • Realized that God wants her life to be sacrificed • Wrote many of heart-touching devotionals • Later, she accepted the New Age ideas and pantheism and universalism

Background of the Story Allegory of her Christian faith Her fearful childhood became the basic foundation of this moving devotional Overcoming personal difficulties and hatred "The Lord God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds' feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places." -Habakkuk 3:19

Summary of the Story • Main character, Most-Afraid was living in the Valley of Humiliation with her friends • Had a fantasy of going to the High Places • She was led by the Chief Shepherd • Her crooked mouth and crippled feet always had been her weakness and sorrow • Attacked by Fear and Coward consistently • Eventually went up on the High Places and came back to the Valley of Humiliation

  6. Climax • On the Shore of Loneliness, Most-Afraid is visited by her relatives: Bitterness, Resentment and Self-Pity • They tried to persuade her to go back, and to manipulate her • Attacked them to fight, but she could not win for the Chief Shepherd was not there

  7. Characters 1 Most-Afraid • Consistently attacked by the Fearings, her relatives • Personal disabilities and weaknesses made her not to be brave • Wanted to go up to the High Places, but had a fear like her family • Follwed the wills of the Chief Shepherd, though she was weak

  8. Characters 2 The Chief Shepherd • Always was a person whom Most-Afraid could rely on • Helped her to realize what it takes to convert disabilities to gifts and talents • Gave Most-Afraid and other flocks hope • He was always there when Most-Afraid tried to call Him

  9. Ending • She got the Hind’s Feet • Eventually arrived to the High Places • Earned a new name, Grace-and –Glory • Her companions, Sorrow and Suffering changed to Joy and Peace • Returned to the Valley of Humiliation to encourage others to go up to the High Places

  10. Moral Teaching • Full lay down at the altar, and accept God’s will rather than your own, He will take You to the High Places • Do not hesitate to take the next step, for God is with you • The responsibilities of encouraging people to go up to the High Places are ours

First Impression and Final Words • I thought this book would be very hard to understand at first • As I read through the pages, serenity flowing in the book made me to be calm and peaceful • I have realized that personal obstacles is used by God for His work if we lay down at the altar • Adapting the lessons into my personal life would be the next job
