Chicken Breeds A wide variety of breeds are used for commercial production of eggs and meat. These include: • Commercial broiler strains:- Hubbard, Lohman, Anak 2000, Avian -34, Cobb, etc. • Commercial layer strains:- Bowans, BV-300, Bowans, Hyline, Dekalb Lohman etc.
Feed • It is important that the feed used for large-scale poultry farming is rich in protein and other nutrients such as zinc, phosphorous, manganese, magnesium, etc. • The feed must also contain adequate vitamins such as vitamin C, D, E, and K.
Housing • In case of large-scale poultry farming, coops, and cages are used for keeping the poultry birds. • A chicken barn in such cases is usually about 66 feet wide by 500 or 600 feet long and houses around 30,000 birds. • Separate breeder houses may have hens that lay eggs where they are incubated and hatch after about 21 days Chickens are sent to market when they are 32 to 63 days old. • This mainly depends on the size of the bird.
