2. GB vs. France (1806) • War between GB and France is heating up • Napoleon excludes all GB goods from Europe. • GB Responds Blockades France • Blockade- the use of ships or troops to prevent movement into a port or region.

3. US gets caught in the Middle • GB escalate aggression towards US • Seize over 1000 American Ships • Escalate Impressment • France • France seizes over 500 American Shipsand its cargo

4. Chesapeake Incident(1807) • HMS Leopard VS. USS Chesapeake • Setting- Coast of VA • HMS Leopard orders the Chesapeake to give up 4 sailors it claims jumped ship. • Chesapeake Refuses • Leopard opens fire • GB takes sailors anyways

6. Reaction Embargo Act 1807 • Jefferson bans trade with both GB and France • Reason- Embargoes used by Americans before the Rev. War brought about the end of unjust laws • Expectation- France and GB will lose to much money to continue harassing US. • Reality- Both Nations barely • Extremely Unpopular in New England

7. 1809 • James Madison becomes president • Continues most of Jefferson’s policies

US vs. Shawnee(1809-11) William Henry Harrison Tecumseh Chief of the Shawnee Recruits natives to fight American settlers Understands superiority of US and attempts to ally himself with GB Once strong enough he plans to take American forts in the Northwest. • Governor of Indiana Territory • Invites Native American Tribes to Fort Wayne, Indiana to discuss the sale of their land

9. Tippecanoe • November 1811- US defeats Shawnee tribe on the Tippecanoe River in Indiana • Tecumseh’s brother “The Prophet” attacks US troops • Harrison easily defeats the forces • US burns Shawnee capital Prophetstown to the ground in reprisal

10. Outcome • Native American Influence in the Northwest is severely diminished. • Encourages the US to go to war with GB • While raiding the Shawnee town, US troops find British made weapons with the natives.
