  8. Mental Fitness Performance Equation PERFORMANCE = physical fitness + sport fitness + mental fitness+ team fitness PERFORMANCE = competencies - interferences

  9. Performance • Physical fitness = strength, speed, agility etc. • Sport fitness = skill, court sense, experience, vision etc. • Team fitness = team bonding, chemistry, leadership etc.

  11. Mental Fitness What does it mean to have mental fitness? • The ability to cope with the many demands (competition, training, lifestyle) that sport/school/arts places on the performer • The ability to be consistent in remaining determined, focused, confident, and in control under pressure.

Mental Fitness • Comes from the frontal lobe of the brain Mental Fitness Attributes: 1) Unshakeable belief in ability to achieve goals 2) Ability to persist with determination in face of set backs 3) Unquenchable desire and motivation from within 4) Ability to focus on task in face of distractions 5) Unaffected by others good and poor performances 6) Ability to switch sport focus on and off

  21. Mental Fitness Motivation • Pick a performance area to focus on • Sport, school, job • Create a list of all of your motivational sources for this area • Identify deterrents to optimal motivation “If you know the ‘why’, you can endure any ‘how’”

  22. Mental Fitness Motivation • An inner drive that directs behavior towards the goal • Defined as the direction and intensity of efforts

  23. Motivation • It depends on: • Personal Factors – needs, interests, goals, personality, etc • Situational Factors – environment, leader style, social support, etc • When looking at motivation, break down the scenario

Mental Fitness Motivational Strategies • Identify personal sources of motivation • Establish specific and realistic goals • Identify targets and objectives • Consider environmental strategies • Prompts, contracts, working conditions • Consider reinforcement strategies • Reward efforts, gain/provide feedback, self-monitor behaviors • Rely on social support strategies • Tell others, buddy system • Identify motivational deterrents • Factors that decrease motivation, establish a plan

  26. Mental Fitness Motivational Sources • Extrinsic – external, drive stemming from outside sources • Awards, external recognition, status, etc. • Intrinsic – innate or within, drive stemming from within oneself • Fun, self-challenge, personal growth, feeling of accomplishment, etc
