News and Business Online www.lexisnexis.com/new
What is it? Search portal to over 36000 individual sources: • Global National and Regional newspapers – such as the New Zealand Herald, Dominion Post, The Press, National Business Review and their equivalents worldwide (either full text or abstracts). • Company and Financial Reports; such as ICC, Extel, Hoovers and Worldscope. • Industry Reports – such as Datamonitor and ICC Keynote Market. • People – biographical sources such Marquis Who’s Who and ICC Company Directors. • Countries – selected country reports such as EIU and PRS Group Risk. • Legal – access to global Case Law and Law Reviews, including US Federal and State Cases, the US Code Service and Commonwealth Case Law.
Why buy? – Give your organisation a competitive edge!! Knowledge is key…you can make informed decisions and increase your competitive advantage when you have all the information at your fingertips, LexisNexis News and Business provides you with that tool. • Research new markets • Predict industry trends • Analyse and monitor competitors • Retrieve company annual and shareholder reports • Track existing and potential customers • Access legal, patent and product information • Monitor mergers and acquisitions Improve your research efficiency and resource accessibility by your extensive access to news, business, financial and market information
How do subscriptions work? • Menu based and Usage based – so if you use the service a lot you pay more, use little then you pay appropriately little. • Menus – during your purchase negotiations you can choose what range of sources (Menus) you want to be able to access. So if you don’t have need for legal materials then you can omit them from your menu package. • Payment – choice of Fixed Monthly Fee or Transactional with payment in US Dollars (this is a US hosted site).
Key Features Aside from the vast array of source material there are certain features that would speed your research time: • Combined Sources – search across a whole country’s newspapers, or a region, or all newspapers in English, worldwide; or worldwide company information. • Create your own source – if you need to be more refined then permanently created your own source specific to your search needs. • Segment Search options – choose which part of a document to search across. So if you know an article’s author, or you want reports on a specific company, then choose to search only across that information. • Results Grouping – rather than having to scroll through a hundred search results you can list your results by source. • Delivery options – any document can be printed, E-mailed or downloaded (with conversion to Word or PDF). • Saved Searches and E-mail Alert – there will be certain searches you always want to keep and run; you can both save these and create an alerter to inform you by E-mail when new results come in.
The Platform Your Search Your Results
Your Results Page options Narrow your search by searching extra text Choose what to do with your results - Print, E-mail, or convert to Word, Text or PD; or set up an Alert for new results See where your results have come from
Full text view of a result Delivery options remain – Print, E-mail, or convert to Word or PDF
Create an Alert • From either your results page or an opened full text result you can create an Alert, which will send you new results for your search at your chosen frequency… Untick the ‘Save as an Alert’ box and you create a ‘Saved Search’, to run at your own convenience
And after you’ve finished all your searches you can later look at a History of what you’ve done • 7 days worth of Recent Searches • 48 hours worth of documents you have opened
Some advanced searching – Segment search Choose from the different segments – each allow you to choose to search across only that part of the source document. In our example here HLEAD means we are only searching across the Headline and Leading Paragraph of the Newspaper Articles. This means you can reduce the number of results and make your search more refined.
More advanced Searching - SmartIndexing SmartIndexing will allow you to refine your searching even further. In our example here, think of how many ‘Compaq’ subsidiaries there are. Using SmartIndexing you can specify exactly which you may want to search across.
Assisted Search templates • The Power Search template, used for the previous search, is the primary search template, enabling you to search across any type of source, and allowing you to browse the Source Directory of over 36000 sources, by which you can create your own source. • Additionally the service offers some assisted search templates in which you can search across some larger groupings of default sources, but this time specific to a general type of product. These are global in nature and the advantage of using them is that the whole search template is designed for that type of product. • You will find the assisted search templates via the Red banner tabs… Please note Public Records is only available for US users. Also if you subscribe to a menu that does not include any of these source areas (e.g. Legal materials) then you will not see the link to it.
