Definition of Torque • Torque is the tendency to produce change in rotational motion. • Torque depends on (1) the amount of force applied and (2) how far the point of rotation is from the force. where • = torque (in Nm or lbft) • F = applied force (in N or lb) • st = length of the torque arm (in m or ft)
The torque arm (st) is the perpendicular distance from the point of rotation to the applied force. F F st st
Example • A force of 10.0 lb is applied to a bicycle pedal. If the length of the pedal arm is 0.850 ft, what torque is applied to the sprocket.
