  1. Chapter 2 Developments and Issues in Music Therapy Research

  2. History • MT research exists as a result of individuals taking their own paths, rather than operating under unitary goals • Could this be because the field is so young and so diverse?

  3. Types of Published Literature • Peer reviewed journals JMT (NAMT/AMTA), Canadian, Music Therapy (AAMT), MTP (NAMT/AMTA), British, Australian, Nordic, New Zealand

  4. Analysis of Journals • Music therapists write more about their clinical work and theory than their research (there are more clinicians and fewer researchers because of the time that it takes!) • JMT publishes mostly research articles as opposed to clinical and theoretical/philosophical papers

  5. Analysis of Journals • Brooks (2003) found that quantitative and clinical papers made up the majority of nine English journals; historical represented the least • 79% of the quantitative were published in JMT • 11% of the quantitative were published in MTP

  6. Analysis of Journals • Those who publish the most over time are more likely to have academic (rather than clinical) positions • Authors in JMT and BJMT are less likely to cite authors/publications from the other journals • Is this due to a difference of philosophy? Or a lack of scholarly maturity?

  7. Different Camps • US training has tended toward quantitative, behavioral perspectives • European training has tended toward qualitative, psychodynamic perspectives

  8. Efforts Toward Broad Dissemination • 1992 - MTP began publishing regular reviews of literature in the three primary US journals • 1999 - AMTA published the first research CD-ROM • Nordic Journal maintains full text and abstracts of research on website • Formation of www.musictherapyworld.net

  9. MT Research and Degrees • Temple (US) PhD in Music Therapy • NYU (US) DA in Music Therapy • MSU, UK, FSU (US) PhD in Music Education with cognate in Music Therapy • Aalborg U (Denmark) PhD in Music Therapy • U of Oslo (Norway) PhD for MT research • City University (London) PhD for MT research • Germany, Australia have fledgling programs

  10. A Wider View • Recent discussions and debates about quantitative vs. qualitative • Need more emphasis on underpinning beliefs and biases • The more categories of research, the better to shine light on the research story • No definable, observable, linear flow to the development of research in the field • Need more refined “listening” to the story • More emphasis on constructivist theory • Different methods for different questions: effects vs. processes

  11. Musical Metaphor • Music therapy research to date is more like “an orchestra warming up than a full symphonic work underway.”
