  1. Food Security – issues to consider(link with population ecology dynamics) • human exponential population growth; • droughts and floods (climate change); • poor farming practices: monoculture; pest control, • loss of topsoil and the need for fertilisers; • alien plants and reduction of agricultural land; • the loss of wild varieties: impact on gene pools; • genetically engineered foods; • wastage. Black writing on a white slide- content from curriculum NB learn for end Gr11 and Gr12

  2. From Gr 12 Examination Guidelines Food security * State what is meant by food security. *Describe how food security is influenced by each of the following factors: • Human exponential population growth • Droughts and floods (climate change) • Alien plants and the reduction of agricultural land • The loss of wild varieties: impact on gene pools • Wastage • Genetically engineered foods • Poor farming practices such as: - Monoculture - Overgrazing and the loss of topsoil - The use of fertilisers - The use of pesticides

  3. Food security is built on three pillars: • Food availability: sufficient quantities of food available on a consistent basis. • Food access: having sufficient resources to obtain appropriate foods for a nutritious diet. • Food use: appropriate use based on knowledge of basic nutrition and care, as well as adequate water and sanitation. Think of food wastage at home/ school/ shops – how can this be reduced and contribute towards food security for all http://www.unwater.org/worldwaterday/hungry_thirsty.html http://www.who.int/trade/glossary/story028/en/

  4. Food insecurity has emerged as a global crisis following the global economic meltdown.1 According to the 2004 report of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on the state of food insecurity in the world, more than 814 million people in developing countries are undernourished.2 Of these people, 204 million live in countries of sub-Saharan Africa, including South Africa. http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/89/12/11-089243/en/ http://rt.com/news/world-food-security-2050-846/

  12. Food Security : PHA • Philippi Horticultural Area (PHA) is a neighbour to the FBEP • Contributes up to 50% of Cape Metropole’s vegetable requirement • Provides employment for approx. 2000 persons, increasing by 3000 in summer, including vulnerable groups (e.g. 70% are illiterate women) • Is irreplaceable within 120km of CT • Highly suited for vegetable production given favourable climate, suitable terrain, high value soils, easily accessible irrigation water. • Addresses food security in both affordability and availability • BUT it is contested land for urban development - land use and resources
