European Settlement in America The thirteen Original colonies
Thirteen Original Colonies • England set up the colonies • They were divided into 3 sections: • New England • Middle Colonies • Southern Colonies
New England • Founded for people looking for religious freedom • Puritans landed at Plymouth Rock, 1620 • More came to Massachusetts Bay in 1630s • Native Americans helped them plant corn to survive
New England • Pilgrims created a government: • Signed the Mayflower Compact 1620 • Brought democracy, idea that people form the government • Held town hall meetings • All male church members could vote • COLONY NEVER PROSPERED!!
New England • Puritans in Massachusetts Bay, 1630s: • Invested in their own joint stock company • Created democratic form of government • PROSEPERED ALMOST IMMEDIATELY • Harvested lumber • Built ships • Traded
New England • Created schools so children could read the Bible • Established religious conformity • NEW ENGLANDERS ENJOYED RELIGIOUS HOMOGENUITY, THRIVING ECONOMY BASED ON TRADE AND DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT
Middle Colonies • Variety of Europeans in Middle Colonies • Dutch settled New York • Swedes settled Delaware • Also had • Quakers – religious group that accepted other religious groups and got along well with Native Americans • Puritans • Openness attracted people!!

Middle Colonies • King Charles II of England gave William Penn land that became Pennsylvania • Ruled by the king but had representatives • Became wealthy by growing grains – became known as the “breadbasket” of the colonies
Middle Colonies • Attracted greatest diversity of people and religions in North America • Founded for purpose of making $$ • Good harbors • Fertile fields
Southern Colonies • Maryland • Virginia • North Carolina • South Carolina • Georgia
Southern Colonies • Jamestown—first permanent English settlement, 1607 • Used the headright system to attract settlers • London Company gave free land to anyone who could pay for their trip • London Company also established the House of Burgesses—gave settlers voice in governance of colony • Jamestown grew into colony of Virginia; pattern for rest of Southern colonies
South Carolina • Founded as a proprietary colony • 8 men, Lords Proprietors loaned King Charles II of England money. • King gave them land of Carolina in return • Used headright system to attract settlers
South Carolina’s First Settlers • First settlers were Englishmen from Barbados • Brought well developed slave system with them • Slavery made plantation owners very wealthy • Other settlers came from many countries • Diverse population • Attracted to prosperous colony
South Carolina’s Government • Lords Proprietors controlled colony through: • Governor and Grand Council • Grand Council: representatives of Lords Proprietors, Carolina elite, and a few common people • John Locke wrote Fundamental Constitution of Carolina • Gave rights to colonists • Laws favored wealthy plantation owners
