Moon phases are the different forms that the moon takes in its appearance from Earth. • The phase of the moon we see on a given day depends on the positions of the moon, Earth, and sun. Remember, the moon does not produce its own light, it only reflects light from the sun. • Our moon passes through 8 different phases during a cycle. • The cycle repeats itself every 29.5 days. • The sun always lights up half of the moon’s surface, while half of it is left dark. The amount of the bright side we see changes as the moon revolves around Earth.
When the moon is directly between the Earth and the sun, we see nothing at all. This is a new moon. • When the moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the sun, we see the entire bright side of the moon, a full moon.
After a new moon, as more and more of the bright side of the moon becomes visible, the moon is waxing, or “growing”. • The amount of moon we see waxes until we reach a full moon. • After a full moon, as less and less of the bright side of the moon becomes visible, the moon is waning, or “shrinking”. • The amount of the moon we can see wanes until we reach a new moon.
Waxing & Waning Moons • When the moon is waxing, the illuminated side is to your right. When the moon is waning, the illuminated side is to your left.
Gibbous & Crescent Moons • When more than half of the moon is illuminated in the sky, we call it a gibbous moon. • When less than half of the moon is illuminated in the sky, we call it a crescent moon.
First and Third Quarter Moons • As the moon is waxing (growing), when we see exactly half of the moon it is called a first quarter moon. • When we see half of a waning moon, it is a third quarter moon. • In a first quarter moon the illuminated side is to your right, and in a third quarter moon it is to your left.
When we describe a moon phase, it’s important that we say whether its waxing or waning AND whether it is a gibbous or crescent moon.
