Ghana: Successful Democracy • What is a democracy? • One of Africa’s few truly successful democracies • Why? • Free media (only 10 countries in Africa have that) • Ability to join non-government groups • Mature political leaders • Luck
Egypt: Revolution just changed it to a democracy • Had basically a dictatorship, but in 2012 there was a revolution and they are trying to create a democracy • The revolution was part of the Arab Spring, a series of countries that had revolutions to start democracy…Tunisia, Libya, Syria
Problems facing Egypt • Getting civilians to work together • Very strong military • Struggling economy • Less public safety • Relationship with Israel and the U.S.
Sudan and South Sudan • Arab North vs. Christian and Animist South • After decades of civil war and millions dead, the countries split in 2011
Problems • Fighting between South Sudan and Sudan continues • Lack of education and health care • Emotional and physical scars of 20+ years of civil war • Fighting over natural resources (oil!)
