January 2014 Mrs Lowe’s P1/2 Classroom News Happy New Year! I hope that you all had a great holiday and are feeling well rested. I would like to say a huge thank you for all of the lovely Christmas gifts. I was really touched by your generosity and kindness . A big thank you to all who contributed to our class toyshop. The children have been building on their knowledge of energy sources and ‘what makes toys go’. We are now moving onto coins, money and making a purchase. P.E. continues to be on a Monday and Wednesday this term. We will be doing gymnastics and focusing on our rolls and balances. If you have not yet returned your child’s P.E. kit to school please do so ASAP. Please be aware that free, fresh fruit continues to be provided at snack time on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for all children. This term we are starting with a mini topic about Edinburgh artist Eduardo Paolozzi followed by an interdisciplinary Space project for which we have lots of exciting things planned including planet studies and designing rockets! In literacy, some of us will be revising cvc (consonant vowel consonant) words before moving onto digraphs (e.g. sh, wh and th) whilst others will be continuing to learn about magic ‘e’ and soft c and g. Could P1s please continue to practice word building at home using individual letter sounds. This is a great support for both reading and writing skills. All children would also benefit from spotting their weekly spelling sounds/patterns (highlighted in the homework) in books at home e.g. Library books. Achievement Books We will shortly be introducing achievement books for all pupils. At the end of each month, your child will bring their book home with an example of a piece of work and the target we are currently working towards. Any certificates/rewards from school or home can now also be recorded in this special book. Monday 20th January – We had a lovely visit to Corstorphine Library where we listened to stories and had a good look at the books. If you are interested in joining the library, the staff would be delighted to help you register. Wednesday 5th February – P1 health and dental checks. Thank you for returning all of the appropriate paper work for this. Every Tuesday – Children will be invited to swap their library books. Parent Consultations – Thursday 13th March (evening) and Friday 14th March (afternoon). Appointment times will be confirmed nearer the time. Friday 14th February to Friday 21st February – February break holiday. Tuesday 25th February7pm - Parent Council Meeting. All welcome. Wednesday 26th February 9am – in the Hub, Coffee and Chat for parents. As always, if you have any questions, comments or news to share, please do grab me for a chat at the end of the day or make an appointment at the office. Mrs Lowe
