Don’t spend too much time reading each passage • Use surveying or previewing to get the topic first • Look at the questions next, then read the passage again • Don’t worry if you don’t know all the words in the passage • Always guess instead of leaving answers blank TOEFL Tips
Look for the words… topic, subject, title, primary idea, or main idea • Usually can find the topic in the first sentence, but quickly check the rest of the passage to be sure • Eliminate wrong answers first, then select the best answer • Practice pp. 253 passage 1 Main Idea Questions
How are ideas related in the passage? • Look for the words organized or related • Other key words are transition words (for example, in contrast, although, likewise…) • Read the first sentences of the paragraphs • Practice pp. 256 passage 1 Organization of Ideas Questions
Use skimming and scanning to look for key words • Eliminate wrong answers • Questions: • “According to the passage…” • “It is stated in the passage…” • “The passage indicates…” • “The author mentions…” • “Which of the following is true…?” • Practice passage 1 pp. 262 Stated Detail Questions
Also need to scan for key words • Look at question first • Look for implied information • “Which of the following is not stated/mentioned/discussed?” • “All of the following are true except?” • Practice passage 1 pp. 265 “Unstated” Details
Similar to “unstated” details • Find a key word in the question • Scan the passage for the key word • Questions: • “It is implied in the passage…” • “It can be inferred from the passage that…” • “It is most likely that…” • “What probably happened…?” • Practice passage pp. 277 Implied Detail Questions
Also use implied information • Questions: • “The paragraph preceding the passage probably…” • Read the first line to answer this question • Draw a conclusion about what comes before • “What is most likely in the paragraph following the passage? • Read the last line to answer this question. • Draw a conclusion about what comes after Transition Questions
