Monitoring the Health Status of Migrants within Europe: Development of Cardiovascular and Diabetes Indicators (WP6) Dr Snorri B. Rafnsson Professor Raj S. Bhopal Public Health Sciences Section University of Edinburgh Medical School Edinburgh, Scotland With acknowledgements & thanks to the MEHO-CVD network "This project is funded under the framework of Public Health Programme 2003-2008 of the European Commission (contract number 2005122)"
Monitoring the Health Status of Migrants within Europe Background • Striking ethnic differences in the risk of CVD & DM exist (Abate & Chandalia, 2005; Carballo, 2008; Chaturvedi, 2003). • At both national and EU levels, information on health of migrant and ethnic minority populations is scattered and has not been systematically collected (Padilla & Miguel, 2007). • Routine data in Scotland generally provide very patchy and severely incomplete information about ethnicity (Bhopal et al, 2005). • Information on CHD in the UK is fragmented, patchy, and mixed in quality; relevant data for ethnic minorities were particularly scarce, exacerbating inequalities (Unal et al, 2003) • In Europe, there is shortage of information from CVD cohort studies on ethnic minority populations (Ranganathan & Bhopal, 2006) • There is an urgent need to systematically document and fill the gap in available data on the burden of CVD & DM in migrant and ethnic minority populations in Europe Project website: www.meho.eu.com
Work Package 6: objectives To identify and describe data with the aim of shedding light on ethnic variation in CVD & DM in Europe To re-analyse existing data for comparison within and between European countries To contribute disease-specific information to the larger project To improve public health through linking data to policy Work Package 6: deliverables A network of European public health professionals/ researchers interested in CVD & DM in minority ethnic groups An inventory of European ethnic-related CVD & DM data A coherent and comparable analysis in a report format Publications in academic journals Input into public health plans and policy A forward plan for the second phase of the projects including the improvements of databases and their use Monitoring the Health Status of Migrants within Europe Project website: www.meho.eu.com
Current objectives To identify data on the burden (health status) of CVD & DM in migrant and ethnic minority populations in the EU member states For each data source, to report on the type of information collected of particular relevance to the MEHO-CVD project Monitoring the Health Status of Migrants within Europe Project website: www.meho.eu.com

Monitoring the Health Status of Migrants within Europe Summary • Availability of data on mortality and morbidity from CVD & DM in migrant and ethnic minority groups in EU member states • Types of currently available ethnic group-coded data sources • Currently available measures of ethnicity in identified data sets • Disease types available in identified data sets Conclusions • The base for assessing needs and planning health care interventions for migrant and ethnic minority populations is relatively weak in the EU countries • The significant lack of reliable and comparable data on CVD & DM in migrant and ethnic minority groups in EU countries needs to be addressed urgently Project website: www.meho.eu.com
